Lecture description
The automation of timber harvesting and transport processes is a key approach to improve efficiency, safety and process quality in forestry operations. Reliable automation of loading and unloading, however, presents a significant challenge due to the variability of log geometries, the unstructured nature of the environment, and the stringent requirements for robustness and safety. This presentation outlines the development of a fully automated system for the detection, classification and handling of logs. The focus is on combining sensor technologies, robust object detection and suitable actuation, as well as their integration into a consistent and reliable overall process. The objective is a practical system that is capable of operating efficiently and flexibly under real-world conditions.
