Sein Studium der Forstwirtschaft absolvierte er an der BOKU, wo er auch promovierte und habilitierte. Internationale Forschungserfahrung sammelte er im Rahmen eines Erwin-Schrödinger-Stipendiums an der ETH Zürich und als Gastprofessor an der University of Canterbury, wodurch er seine wissenschaftliche Ausrichtung und Erfahrungen in der Lehre um globale Perspektiven erweitern konnte. In seiner Forschung beschäftigt sich Karl Stampfer insbesondere mit der Optimierung der Holzernte im Steilgelände, der Modellierung und Simulation von Holzerntesystemen sowie der Entwicklung von Entscheidungsunterstützungssystemen für die Praxis. Weitere Schwerpunkte liegen in der effizienten Bereitstellung von Biomasse aus Holz sowie in der Ergonomie und Arbeitssicherheit bei der Waldarbeit. Ziel seiner sehr praxisorientierten Forschungsarbeiten ist es, Innovation und Digitalisierung in der Forsttechnik zu fördern sowie Produktivität und Sicherheit bei der Waldbewirtschaftung unter Minimierung von Umweltauswirkungen zu verbessern.
